Objectives For IR Pilot

Institutional Repository Pilot Project

The goal of this pilot project is to test and evaluate the use of a digital institutional repository (DIR) as a possible strategy for long-term preservation of and continued access to digital research materials produced by the students, faculty and staff of the University of Missouri. The pilot project will utilize the DSpace digital repository system, from MIT, to capture, store, index, preserve and redistribute a representative sample of digital research materials.

The sample will be chosen to reflect a variety of disciplines, content types and formats, and will include examples of materials representing different intellectual property rights and access management issues.

The primary objectives of this pilot are to identify:

  1. the core competencies required to launch and operate a full-scale DIR
  2. the respective roles and responsibilities of content creators, librarians, and technologists in managing a DIR
  3. the benefits or incentives necessary to encourage faculty to participate
  4. the financial and personnel resources required for the long-term sustainability of the DIR
  5. the appropriate preservation levels and methods for different types of digital materials
  6. the major policy issues that will have to be addressed prior to implementation of the DIR
  7. document the requirements of an institutional repository platform for the University of Missouri System
